Taylor Swift easily holds on to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 album chart for a second week as her “Red” album sold another 344,000 copies. This follows the album's first-week sales of 1.2 million, which marked the biggest debut week in more than a decade.

That’s a 72% drop in sales from the first week to the second, which isn’t unusual for mega-selling albums. To put these numbers into perspective, only five of the albums that have reached the top of the national sales chart in 2012 have sold more than 344,000.

"Red" is now the second biggest-selling album release of the year, having surpassed One Direction’s “Up All Night.” But it still trails the runaway leader in Adele’s “21,” the 2011 album that has sold 4.1 million copies so far this year.

    Taylor Swift's "Red" reigns supreme for a third week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 196,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan (down 43%).
    Swift beats the No. 2 title -- the debuting "Now 44" collection -- by nearly 100,000 copies.

    "Red" is Swift's first album to spend its first three weeks at No. 1 .
    Her 2010 set "Speak Now" earned two frames atop the list from the start and then dropped out of the No. 1 slot for five weeks. It eventually returned for four more weeks at No. 1.

    Before that, Swift's one other No. 1, 2008's "Fearless," debuted at the top, then slipped to No. 4 in its second frame. It returned to rule for another 10 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1.
