The defending MLS champion Galaxy will host the Earthquakes on Sunday night in Carson in the first leg of a home-and-home series. The second leg is Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium. This will mark the first time since 2005 that the Earthquakes and Galaxy have met in the playoffs.

The Whitecaps executed their game plan as far as it could take them, but in the end it wasn't enough and they didn't have a Plan B when LA finally injected some urgency into their play. The Galaxy were a little timid in the first half, but when Arena made his tactical switches they began to reap the rewards - and Keane was a menace all night.

Mike Magee scored the tying goal in the 69th minute, and Landon Donovan converted a penalty kick four minutes later, leading the Los Angeles Galaxy to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps in a knockout playoff game Thursday night.

But Los Angeles' stars finally came through. David Beckham's corner kick helped set up Magee's goal, and Donovan drew a penalty with a strong run to earn the go-ahead goal, the record 21st of his MLS playoff career. San Jose won the Supporters' Shield as league's best regular-season team.
