Hey everyone

So,I'm probably the kind of girl that always has some philosophical question on her mind(I'm weird)...
Anyways,I`m really interested in what other people think about this. I asked two of my friends the same question and they had completely different opinions.
What do you think? Is our life destined by chance or by fate?
Can`t wait to hear(read in this case) from you!

    Hmm....I don't know! I think both happens at different times. I do think, though, that when people get picked for the T-Party, it's because fate believes they should meet Taylor :)

    None of them are true.

    We can not say : Everything that happens to us are managed by a superior being (or other people call it God ).

    Also we can not say that, something happens to us merely by a chance or a coincidence.

    Both statements are incorrect.

    Many people say that fate and Karma are the same thing, that they both lead to destiny and that one won’t come without the other. In many ways, this is true, but at the root of it, both fate and karma are different. Let’s look at the similarities first: Fate is described by Wikipedia as : “ Fate is destiny, an inevitable course of events”, and describes karma as : “ Cause that affect the entire cycle of cause and effect “. On the surface, these two explanations are very similar. Fate is similar to destiny, where by things happen for a reason. Karma also means that things happen for a reason. So are they the same ? Simply put, no. Fate puts our lives in the hands of a greater being, a superior being or a master plan of the universe. A Buddhist would not see this as being possible. To demonstrate my point, lets look at gravity. Before Sir Issac Newton sat under that tree that (fateful) day, gravity was seen as “ The Will of God “. God wanted us to be stuck to the ground, and that anything not on the ground was a miracle. Once Newton ‘wrote’ the law of gravity, it was no longer mystical, but physics. When we look back at it now, it seems pretty obvious. The apple fell, not because of “ divine intervention “, but because gravity pulled the apple down. Similarly, events do not happen just because of some divine plan, but because of karma. Karma is not just a theological subject, it too, is physics. As stated above, it is the Law of Cause and Effect. You throw a ball up, it will eventually come down and hit the ground. This is not just obvious, it’s physics. Even if you don’t hold the Buddhist concept of Rebirth, Karma still works, logically speaking. We can see it in the smallest things we do, like throwing a ball in the air, to the biggest things, like putting in effort at school and getting good results. This may seem obvious to the sceptic, but is still classed as Karma to a Buddhist. To a Buddhist, Karma isn’t a retribution or evil law, it’s plain obvious. If you slap your self around the face, it will hurt. It’s not because some higher power wants to see you in pain, it because you slapped yourself ! Karma, like gravity, isn’t controlled by a higher power such as the God, it is just there, in the background. We can’t see it, taste it, smell it, feel it, hear it or detect it by any other means, until it comes to fruition. Yesterday actions will affecting today conditions, and today actions will affecting tomorrow conditions.

    So, there is “ ORDER “ in the entire
    universe, that totally in harmony with the Law of Nature.

    I'm going to quote someone on my feelings about this (don't take this personally haha) "There is no fate, there is no destiny, there is no luck. Astrology is ridiculous. Tarot cards tell you nothing. You cannot read a palm. Tea leaves make tea and nothing else. Jim Morrison is not hanging out with Elvis, and the Kennedys did not kill Marilyn."

    Really... I think we create our own fate. I think I even wrote a paper on this once. I don't believe in predestination or anything.

    In mathematics, 2 + 2 “definitely” 4, not “probably” 4. Positive number plus positive number equals positive. Negative number plus negative number equals negative. Positive number plus negative number decrease positive and increase negative.

    In The Law Of Karma, the result is “ definitely ”, not “ probably ”. Positive action plus positive action brings positive result. Negative action plus negative action brings negative result. Positive action plus negative action decrease the positive result and increase the negative result.

    The positive result is happiness and the negative result is sadness.

    It`s great to read all these (different) opinions!
    I believe in both...chance and fate(mostly fate).
    I do think,that you can controle your fate with the choices you make...whether it`s good or bad.
    But sometimes things happen to us that we can`t controle(like falling in love-we don`t have an influence on that!). That`s a fact.
    But then again,there are things like horrible crimes(murder,rape) which definitely hasn't got anything to do with destiny. Whoever says that innocent children dying (for example) is fate (and I do know that there are people who think like that) is a heartless monster. It makes absolutely no sense.

    I'm sorry I got a little off the point.
    There`s a quote(I only know it in german,so I'll try to translate it in a way that it makes sense) that I`d like to share with you:
    "Destiny shuffles the cards but you have to play them."

    I’m a buddhist, and I believe in Rebirth or Reincarnation.

    So, in my point of view, something that we have done in our previous life in certain ways could affecting our present life but not entirely.

    For example :

    If someone gets hit by a car and died right now, maybe in his previous life he already striking someone with his car to death.

    If someone gets shot by a criminal and died right now, maybe in his previous life he already shot someone with his gun to death.

    If someone fell in love with you or vice a versa, maybe in his previous life he already had some kind of relationship or friendship with you.

    The point here is : that nothing is
    happens for no reason or no cause, or merely just a coincidence. Even chaos is happens for a cause. Nothing cames from nowhere, it is either the result of the past, or it is caused by current factors.

    At one time the Blessed One lived in the monastery offered by Anaathapindika in Jeta’s grove in Saavatthi. Then the young man Subha, Toddeyya’s son approached the Blessed One, exchanged friendly greetings, sat on a side and said. ‘Good Gotama, among humans, why is there evident inferior and superior states ? We see humans with short life and long life, with many ailments and few ailments, beautiful and ugly, weak and powerful, poor and wealthy, from low clans and high clans, foolish and wise. Good Gotama, why are these differences seen among humans ?’

    ‘Young man, beings are the owners, heirs, origins, relations and refuges of actions. Action classifies beings as inferior and superior’.

    ‘Good Gotama, I do not understand this short exposition given without details. If Good Gotama would teach me, so that I would understand this short exposition.’

    ‘Then listen young man, attend carefully I will teach.

    Young man, a certain woman or man destroys living things, is fierce with bloody hands, engaged in destroying living things without compassion. On account of that action, accomplishment and undertaking, after death he decreases, is born in hell. After death, if he does not decrease and is not born in hell, and if born with humans, wherever he is born, has short life. Young man the behaviour of destroying living things, being fierce with bloody hands, engaging in destroying living things without compassion is conducive to be born with short life.

    Young man, a certain woman or man gives up and abstains from destroying living things, throws away stick and weapon ashamed, and abides with compassion for all living things. On account of that action, accomplishment and undertaking, after death he increases, is born in heaven. After death, if he is not born in heaven, and if born with humans, wherever he is born, has long life. Young man the behaviour of giving up and abstaining from destroying living things, throwing away stick and weapon ashamed, abiding with compassion for all living things, is conducive to be born with long life.

    Young man, a certain woman or man by nature, hurts beings with hands, clods, sticks or weapons. On account of that action, accomplishment and undertaking, after death he decreases, is born in hell. On account of that action, accomplishment and undertaking, after death he decreases, is born in hell. Young man the behaviour of being jealous of others’ gains, of hospitality, reverence, esteeming, veneration, offerings and angrily growing a bond of jealousy is conducive to be born inferior.

    Young man, a certain woman or man is not jealous of others’ gains, of hospitality, reverence, esteeming, veneration and offerings and grows no bond of jealousy. On account of that action, accomplishment and undertaking, after death he increases, is born in heaven. Young man the behaviour of not being jealous of others’ gains of hospitality, reverence, esteeming, veneration and offerings and not growing a bond of jealousy is conducive to be born superior.

    Young man, a certain woman or man is of the nature of not giving to recluses, or brahmins, eatables, drinks, clothes, conveyances, flowers, scents, ointments, beds, dwellings and illuminations.     So then young man, the method conducive to short life brings short life, long life brings long life, many ailments brings many ailments, few ailments brings few ailments, ugliness brings ugliness, beauty brings beauty, superiority brings superiority, inferiority brings inferiority, poverty brings poverty, great wealth brings great wealth, low clan brings low clan, high clan brings high clan, foolishness brings foolishness and wisdom brings wisdom.

    Young man, beings are the owners, heirs, origins, relations and refuges of actions. Action classifies beings as inferior and superior.’

    Then the young man Subha, the son of Todeyya said to the Blessed One. ’Good Gotama, now I understand, it is like something overturned is reinstalled, so that those who have their sight could see forms. Good Gotama has explained the Teaching in various ways. Now I take refuge in Good Gotama, in the Teaching and the Community of bhikkhus. Bear me as a lay disciple who has taken refuge from today until life lasts.

    i think its both. sometimes things come together and it all works out but it wouldnt have happened if something didnt happen at the right time, which we cant control.

    i also think we control our own fate to a certain extent or help it along. like you may be 'destined' to do something but if you get out there and try it you'll move everything along

    "There are no uncaused effects." Thus it is very general principle in physics. Probability and statistics are still valid of course--they merely tell us how things happen, but we learn nothing from statistics about the causes which lead to these events. In science "causality" has always been a fundamental notion.

    It is not unusual to hear people suggest that time plus chance will accomplish the evolution of simple organisms into more complex entities. There is a logical error in such statements. There is no such thing as chance. That is, chance is not an entity which causes things to happen.

    In the tossing a coin we say that we can count on the coin coming up heads half the time, and tails the other half of the time. The odds are 50/50. What we forget is that one flip of the coin involves a whole chain of causal factors. The weight of the coin, the shape of the coin, the upward impulse of the toss, air resistance, spin--the initial conditions--all interact on each toss of the coin. It is a mathematical convenience to say that the probability of heads is 50% and the probability of tails is 50%. The more tosses of the coin we make the closer the spectrum will come to a pure 0.5000 probability. But every individual toss of a coin is controlled by the laws of physics. There is no mechanism called "chance" determining the outcome of any toss of the coin.
